May 11-14th 2024 Three days, three nights Maximum 6 participants During spring, the Kachemak Bay erupts with life, hosting an impressive number of migratory shorebirds and songbirds as they move north to begin nesting. On this workshop you will learn how to get intimate eye-level photos of these awesome birds with Jamin H. Taylor and Sergius Hannan. Itinerary: Day 1 The workshop begins in the evening of May 11th where you will be transported from the airport to your lodging. Once checked in, we will meet over an included dinner to get to know each other and discuss the coming days. The sun sets over the ocean by 10:30 PM, so we will have a few hours of daylight to drive to the Anchor River where many shorebird species such as turnstones, sandpipers, plovers, yellowlegs, and whimbrels will congregate and feed during the outgoing tides. Although shorebirds will be our main focus here, bald eagles, merlin, and northern harriers are regularly seen in the area. Days 2 & 3 In the mornings we will search for eagles and otters on the Homer spit and sandhill cranes performing their mating display in golden light before heading into the shaded forest to photograph elusive songbirds on their natural mossy perches. Common species found are pacific wrens, varied thrush, chickadees, warblers, and kinglets. Northern goshawks and great horned owls nest near the area and can often be heard and sometimes seen. We will stop for a lunch at the Bagel Shop, then take a mid day break back at the hotel or at the local gift shops on the Homer Spit while we wait for the sunlight to become less harsh. After an early group dinner, we'll spend our evening at the Anchor River once again to photograph more shorebirds feeding along the beach. Here we will focus on perfecting our shorebird photography, experimenting with different techniques such as long-exposure and wide angle. Every outing provides different opportunities! Day 4 We will conclude with a brief outing shooting ducks and cormorants flying by at Land's End, then say our goodbyes. Transportation to the airport is included. Cost Per Person: $2,000 $1,000 deposit required to secure booking. The remaining $1,000 is due 60 days prior to the workshop date.
